Gilles Villeneuve developed his fearless driving style and honed his skills on the snowmobile racing circuits of his native Québec, even before he conquered the Formula 1 world. In his late teens, snowmobile racing was a primary source of income, even demanding appearance money after winning the 1974 World Championship Snowmobile Derby.
Gilles credits his snowmobiling days with teaching him a "great deal about control" because the machines "used to slide a lot," sharpening his reactions, and eliminating any worries about racing in the rain due to "terrible" visibility from blowing snow. This experience provided him with a unique skill set, including car control in extreme conditions, which would later prove invaluable in his Formula 1 career.
