Monaco Street Battle

The 1981 Monaco Grand Prix was a particularly significant event in Gilles career. In what is often referred to as the 1981 Monaco Magic, Gilles drove his Ferrari 126C, a car he famously described as a "big red Cadillac", to his first win in Europe and the first ever for a Ferrari car equipped with a turbo engine. The triumph demonstrated Gilles’ prowess on one of Formula 1's most challenging tracks and played a crucial role in propelling Ferrari back to prominence in the seasons that followed.

Chaos In the Streets — Gilles Villeneuve won the 1981 Monaco GP, a remarkable first European victory for him and Ferrari's turbo. In mastering the challenging circuit, he became the only Canadian to win in Monaco.

Uncle Henri Coupal

For Villeneuve, a lifelong passion for motors grew over time. His father, with a heavy foot, passed on a love for speed, while his uncle Henri Coupal, a mechanic and boat pilot, ignited his interest.

From Snow to Circuit

In 1974, Gilles Villeneuve won the Snowmobile World Championship and began his career in Formula Atlantic. His snowmobile victory was key—it gave him the funds to move up, as he used his prize money, along with selling his mobile home, to finance his entry into Formula Atlantic.
