According to Gaston Parent, Villeneuve’s manager, Gilles would, before a race, "Go like hell, come to the place where he was supposed to start, then slam on the brakes to leave two big black marks on the track". Villeneuve explained that "When I go to my place on the grid, I put my tires on the black marks and when the race starts I have rubber on rubber for better traction". If you look carefully, two big black marks are visible in films of Villeneuve’s races.
